Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, is located in central Sichuan province. It is the southwest technology center, business center, financial center and hub of transportation and communication. And Chengdu is also Sichuan province’s political, economic, cultural and educational hub.
Chengdu belonged to Shu Kingdom in ancient time. In Qin Dynasty, Ba region and Shu region were merged into Shu County. And later in Han Dynasty, jin officer which means brocade officer was specially set for supervision due to its advanced brocade industry, hence it is also called "Jin Officer City".
In the Five Dynasties period, hibiscuses were planted ubiquitously, therefore “the City of Hibiscus” came up, abbreviation of "Rong". Chengdu covers a total land area of 12,400 square kilometers, including 283.86 square km downtown area. Its permanent resident population is 14.17 million.
As the earliest developed area in the southwestern of China, Chengdu, with over 2300 years of history, is the first batch of historical and cultural renowned city. And it is also the permanent host city of Chinese intangible cultural heritage festival.
Chengdu plain is the biggest plain of our nation’s southwestern areas. Dujiangyan Irrigation System, located in the main stream of Min River, whose irrigation networks fanned out in the broad Chengdu plain, makes Chengdu plain enjoy the reputation of the being “Heavenly Land of Plenty”, where flood and drought can be handled well by civilians who do not know what the famine is at all. Chengdu, the cradle of Sichuan cuisine which is one of the four famous cuisines in China, is renowned for the Land of Abundance and the Land of Flavors. In 2010, Chengdu was defined as the first Asian World Gourmet Capital by United Nations Educational Scientific and Educational Organization.
Chengdu is named the top tourist city in China by both United Nations World Tourism Organization and China National Tourism Administration. There are many scenic spots in and around Chengdu downtown, such as Dujiangyan Irrigation System and Qingcheng Mountain, Jiuzhaigou Valleyand Yellow Dragon (the world natural heritage) and Chengdu Research Base of the Giant Panda Breeding etc.
Sichuan Opera Chengdu, which has been described in early times as the “Sichuan Opera crowns the opera world”, is the homeland of Chinese opera. Sichuan Opera, with roots from Qing dynasty, is one of the important local operas in China with various kinds, beautiful words and humorous styles. It also has various technique of performances, implicit and meaningful stylized actions, special instrumental music and vocal accompaniment which is joining in singing behind the stage. Especially the unique skills, such as “face-changing”,“fire-spitting” and so on are really marvelous.
Food in Chengdu can be divided in three categories: Sichuan Cuisine, snack and hot pot. “Sichuan Cuisine” with its thousands of dishes tops in the four main cuisines in China. The distinguishing feature is “one dish has one unique style and frequent uses of spices”, which demonstrates that every dish has its own allusion. In recent years, “hot pot” with famous brands catches on everywhere in China. Today, hot pot in its amazing speed of development is becoming more and more popular and changing the eating habits of many places to some degree.
Adorable giant panda is not only the national treasure of China, but also regarded as a symbol of peace and friendship and thus became the world’s treasure. Giant panda is native of China, mainly in Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces. At present, the total number of wild giant panda is less than 1,000, of which 80% are in Sichuan Province. There are a few pandas in region of Dujiangyan, Chongzhou, Dayi and Pengzhou of Chengdu suburb. Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding & Research Base (Panda Eco-park) is established to protect and save giant panda, an endangered species. It is currently the only Giant Panda Breeding & Research Base built in metropolis in the world.
There are many famous cultural landscapes in Chengdu, such as Dujiangyan, Qingcheng Mountain, Temple of Marquis Wu, Du Fu Thatched Cottage, Jinsha Ruins (archaeological site) etc. As the Three Kingdoms’ Cultural Mecca, Temple of Marquis Wu Museum is famous at home and abroad. It is built to commemorate Zhuge Liang and Liu Bei, the most prestigious persons of the Shu Kingdom, and it is the only temple in commemoration of the king and his people. Also it is the most influential Three Kingdoms Relic Museum in the whole country.
Chengdu is a city walking from the history towards the future and a city of inclusion, harmony, civilization. Once you come to this city, you will never want to say goodbye to it.
